The Persian word "bazaar" is different from a shopping center in English. When you visit Iran, you will see so many different things in an Iranian bazaar that you may wonder what type of a place it is. Actually, bazaar in Iran doesn't refer to a place where people merely go for shopping. It's a commercial and cultural community which can influence various aspects of life in society like politics, economics, religion, etc.

When you are in Iran, make sure you spend some time exploring the bazaar and observe different corners of it. Then, you'll see there are so many different people from all walks of life in there.

Various Guilds in Iranian Bazaars

Merchants, distributors, retailers, etc: A lot of commodities are bought from other cities or countries by merchants, who aren't necessarily selling them in their shops or offices. Instead, distributors perform marketing and sell those items to retailers inside the same bazaar, the same city or other towns in the same country. Retailers themselves are selling all sorts of stuff from clothing and spices to ornaments and watches. You can almost find whatever you think of inside such communities.

Money exchangers: As tourists in Iranian bazaars, you may need to exchange some foreign currency for buying the stuff you want to purchase. Look for such shops and your need will be answered. Of course, it doesn't mean that you can find such a shop at every corner. Sometimes, because of the huge size of bazaars, you have to spend lots of time looking for such a place, but they exist.

Food sellers: Some stores are into selling food, specially traditional type to the shoppers, shop owners, office workers, etc. Today when you visit Iran, it would be interesting to have a meal inside the bazaar at one of such traditional restaurants and try some Iranian dizzi, which is kind of a broth with chickpeas, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, meat, dried lime, etc. Traditional tea houses are interesting places where you can stop by and have a chat during your visit to learn about life and people by talking to them.

Mosques, shrines and mausoleums: For the people who are working or shopping in Iranian bazaars, there are several spots where they can stop for prayer. Some religious people, who want to make wishes and pray for something that they want, go to certain shrines inside the bazaars. To revere some deceased dignitaries, people may have built mausoleums to show their respect to them. Some go to such places to respect them. Usually some religious characteristics are associated with these places too.

Traditional gyms: They are called Zoorkhaneh meaning house of strength. These are sport clubs where office employees and employers, shopkeepers, store owners, etc are going to for exercising. Usually they are more active early in the morning and later in the afternoon.

Schools: Traditionally people have been accustomed to see seminaries inside bazaars too. It doesn't mean that you can find religious schools only inside bazaars, but they are possible to be found in such places as well. Of course, you cannot find modern-style education centers like colleges and universities over there, because bazaars are traditional centers by nature.

Artisans and craftsmen: There are some workshops in which certain traditional Iranian handicrafts are made, packed and piled to be sold to the shops. In certain parts of the bazaars, during your visit you may see and hear a noisy quarter of the bazaar where several people are hammering metals, sawing wood, washing and dying threads, etc. These are the ones who have traditionally been involved in such guilds to make a living.

Animal sellers. Some people keep certain animals as pets like birds, etc. So, in some cities, you may find some part of the bazaar selling pigeons, nightingale, parrots, etc. Even some shops are selling other animals that could make food for some. I mean you find turkey, chickens, geese, ducks, etc as well as fresh eggs.

What's Going on in Iranian Bazaars?

In a word, I can say it's the life that you see in the Iranian bazaars. Usually cultural tourists are exploring a country to see life in it. During your visit to Iran, make sure you spend some time exploring Iranian bazaars to see the traditional life and culture in it. One thing is very important. Iran is a country at the transitional stage from traditionalism to modernity. So, you can find some aspects of modern life like shopping centers in its cities, specially in bigger cities, while long-established neighborhoods like bazaars are still functioning.
