It may not surprise you to know that there are still a lot of people out there that don't know what private equity firms do. They probably rightly assume that it is best left to bankers and financial companies to sort out, but then is that where we are all going wrong? Just because we don't understand something doesn't mean that we should just shut our minds off to the idea of it. We could be missing out on a fantastic opportunity.
Private Equity firms manage money that is invested into companies that are not publicly traded. Obviously this still might not make any sense to some people. Basically when you set up a business there are different stages and levels that your business can take on. Generally a business will start off at the partnership stage; from there you can become a limited company.
When you are a limited company you can have shares in the company, the money that is obtained from these shares is then used to progress the company forward in exchange for a long term investment. The shareholders will of course receive some bonuses for the money that the firms invest for them. This will generally be in the form of payouts received by the individual at the end of the financial year or at set given intervals. These returns will not match up to the value of the initial investment made via the private equity firms, but depending on the amount invested and the success of the company over the calendar year, it could prove to be a significant amount.
Obviously the shares that you have bought in the private company will have a value and as long as the company doesn't fold then you will always be able to regain your money which you had originally invested into the company if you need to get hold of your money.
One major drawback that you have when investing in a private company is that the rewards are potentially not as great as they would be if you invested into a public company that is trading on the stock exchange. Of course there are a number of potential pitfalls if you are investing on the stock exchange as your investment can go up as well as down and although it is unlikely companies that have managed to forge a reputation and make it onto the stock exchange can still go bust.
