Wedding gifts are an important part of most weddings. These presents give the happy couple the means to live a normal life and are frequently used to kit out the home with the bare essentials. Prices for wedding gifts vary immensely, with some items costing hundreds of pounds to cheaper items. Price is ultimately unimportant, after all, it is the thought that counts.
The way in which wedding gifts are now bough however is changing rapidly. Originally the purpose of the items was to help the couple in their new life together. In the modern age however many couples have already lived together and hence have gained most of the items they need for everyday life. Increasingly presents are now consisting of money towards the honeymoon or luxury items.
That said wedding gifts certainly still have a place in the modern tradition. Buying a quality dinnerware set for a couple can be seen as an excellent long term present. Asset that is special and will on be used on certain occasions is extremely useful, particularly for dinner parties, Christmases and birthdays. Additionally buying an items such as this means that it will have an emotional attachment to the couple, a reminder of their special day the beginning of their lives together.
In the modern age the internet plays an important role at weddings. Many department stores offer a service where the couple are given a barcode scanner, then using this scanner they traverse the store scanning the barcodes of any items they like. This automated system then places the list on the internet that is constantly updated as items are purchased.
This has not always been the way however. For many cultures the process of list shopping and presents for the bride and groom are relatively recent activities. In the past guests were the ones who in fact received gifts, referred to as favours. These favours typically consisted of small inexpensive items such as trinkets or lucky charms. The tradition is still evident today at some weddings where small bags of almonds are placed on the dining tables.
For those choosing a gift it is essential that it has longevity and will remain with the couple for years to come. While a television may be the priority for some couples this will not be present to remember, simply a piece of equipment that will serve its purpose and then be discarded once it has become obsolete. Hence when buying wedding gifts the thought process should involve sentimentality, practicality and lasting appeal. |
