If you rent your house there are normally restrictions on what kind of modifications and decorations you can do to your home. Having lived in rented homes for a number of years I know just how much of a nightmare this can be!
While it does depend exactly on the terms and conditions of your contract, it is often a battle to even do fairly basic decoration such as painting a ceiling. Some contracts literally allow for no changes to be made at all. As such it can often be difficult to give your home a personal touch and a feeling of character.
One way to try and get around this fact is to focus on using personal touches on things that you can change. The biggest impact is often furniture, as they are often a major focal point of any room. This is especially true in your living room, dining room and the bedrooms.
Your bedroom is generally considered to be the most personal room of any home. It will reflect your character and shows anyone who sees it exactly what kind of person you are!
While you might be restricted on exactly what kind of changes you can make, even in your own bedroom, hope is not lost however. With just a few simple changes and additions you can transform your bedroom from a generic looking room with a bed, to a sanctuary and haven that really highlights your character.
While you may not be able to paint or redecorate the walls or ceiling or change the carpets there are many other changes you can make. If your contract allows you to change the curtains to something of your choice, then you can make over a dark room in to a bright and well lit one simply by using finer and lighter coloured curtains.
Wardrobes and cabinets are a great way to bring some unique flair in to your bedroom. While most are traditionally made of wood, you can really find some unusual pieces of furniture that allow you to show off your own tastes and personal touches.
Even using a set of traditional wooden pieces of furniture allows for a large amount of variation and choice, with so many different varieties of wood available or the ability to paint them, add stencilling or patterns which is a great way to transform cheap second hand furniture and make to uniquely yours!
One of the biggest and most obvious things that you can change is your bed. It is often such a dominant piece of furniture in the room, imposing far into the room. Making it the focal point of the room is a great idea, as there are so many things you can do to personalise your bed.
While to some people a bed is 'just a bed' there really is no limit to how much variation you can give to your bed. Just simple things such as adding additional pillows, such as a small round one between the pillows that are already there, can help to individualise your bedroom.
By using bedspreads that match your personality, either in aesthetic appearance or in colour or both, you can put your own personal stamp on your bedroom, making it truly yours even if you live in furnished accommodation, rugs, throws and cheap cushions are great ways to alter the look of the rooms and make the house feel like home. |
