If you are new to blogging, you may feel like you're jumping into the middle of a conversation when you try to catch up and learn the basics. That's what happened to me when I decided it was time to learn about WordPress and plug-ins. So, to save you the trouble of going back in time to find out the most basic information, I've compiled it for you here.

First of all, what is WordPress?

WordPress is a blog publishing application, which means it is a computer tool you use to develop and maintain, that is, publish, your blog. It focuses on aesthetics, web standards, and usability; three very important features of a high functioning blog.

Word Press is what's called an Open Source Project, which means that hundreds of people all over the world work on it. It's free for anyone to use without paying a license fee. Open Source Projects promise better quality and reliability, greater flexibility, lower costs, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in.

It's a continually evolving blogging platform, using community input to extend and improve.

Now, what is a plug-in?

A plug-in is a computer program that provides a very specific function on a website. Plug-ins allow bloggers and website owners to add functions as needed. Too many plug-ins can slow down the time it takes web pages to load. That's why a good strategy is to choose only the plug-ins that perform the specific tasks you need in order to achieve your objectives for your site.

All together now ... plug-ins

Plug-ins make your site easier to administer and extend the functionality of the application. With plug-ins WordPress can do almost anything for your blog that you can imagine.

For example, there's a plug-in that lets your blog display comments on a sidebar without reloading the page. Another plug-in presents site archives in a unique visual way. With another blog you can access articles and images from within the WordPress edit page. A different plug-in makes it possible to add a photo or link to a blog quickly and easily using a pre-defined template. As you can see, plug-ins add very specific functions.

Where do plug-ins come from?

You can either download plug-ins or build your own if you can't find what you want. WordPress.org offers over 6,000 plug-ins you can download for free. But WordPress.org isn't the only source for plug-ins. Search for "wordpress plug-ins" and you'll see the choices out there. Just beware, not all plug-ins are of equal quality and usefulness. Look for reviews of plug-ins you're considering for your blog. Many bloggers share their experience and make helpful recommendations.

Now that you understand this most basic of information about WordPress plug-ins, you can take the next step and learn more from a variety of helpful websites, starting with wordpress.com.
