When my husband and I had to start cutting corners to pay our bills, we chose to let our home insurance lapse. Both of us had recently been laid off from our jobs and being able to put food on the table for our three children was becoming harder and harder. We never thought that anything would happen to the house and we were sure that as soon as things got better, we would reinstate the policy.

Two weeks after cancelling the insurance, a very big storm damaged our roof so badly that the whole front part had been ripped clear down to the plywood. I remember taking the kids to the basement because of hearing the shingles flying off and not sure what else might happen. My husband was not home at the time and when he did finally return he went out to assess the damage. He could not believe that out of the twelve homes in our neighborhood, our home was the only one with roof storm damage.

We both knew that there was no use in calling our insurance company to come out and look at our storm damaged roof. They would never cover it since we had not paid the premiums to continue with the coverage we had with them previously. I knew that it was only a matter of time before the plywood could not hold off the elements. It would start to fail and rain would eventually make its way into our home. I called my parents who came over to help put a big tarp over the most heavily damaged roof section of the house.

The tarp did its job for about two months and then we knew that we would have to have a roofing company come and give us an estimate of what it would cost to replace the entire thing. This was something that we just did not have the money for, but it had to be done and done very quickly. My parents offered to give us half of the four thousand dollars it was going to cost to have the roof repaired properly. We were able to take out cash advances from our credit cards to come up with the rest.

The new roof was completed in about four days and it looked great. There is no more rain water finding its way into our home. The amount of money that was spent on the roof could have been used to pay for the insurance we let go, a few times over. We have both since found new jobs and have found an insurance company that would insure us since after you let your insurance lapse, some companies find you to be a high risk. Luckily, we were able to be insured again and by a company that would cover roof storm damage if it were to ever occur again.

When having to choose between having insurance and almost anything else in the future, I know that we will choose insurance. We have learned a very valuable lesson with this whole experience. It is better to be safe than sorry. I never want to be sorry about choosing to let go of something that may cost you more in the end.
