Your eyes are the biggest gift you have been given. It is one of the most essential organs of your body that helps a person understand and make sense of their surroundings. However, this gift faces many problems and difficulties. One problem that is faced by the human eye is dryness. Dryness in your eyes can cause irritation and obstruction when you try to view an object. To get relief from the problem of dryness in the eye there are many medications available in the market. These medicines can do wonders in treating the problem of dryness in your eyes. There are many stores that sell over-the-counter eye drops which can help in treating dry eyes. These medicated drops provide short-term relief to people suffering from dryness in their eyes. Dryness in the eyes can be due to various factors. One of the most common causes of dryness is heavy reading, or sitting in from of a monitor or television for a prolonged duration. The over-the-counter medicated drops provide short-term relief by restoring the water content in your eyes.
Straining your eyes is not the only cause from dry eyes. Changes in weather conditions can also cause dryness. For example, people may face acute dryness in their eyes during summer or on a windy day. Dryness in the eyes could also be caused by travelling in a plane. The air within the plane lacks moisture, which could cause dryness in your eyes. There are many people who suffer from dryness in their eyes because they drink very little water. Drinking not enough water can cause dehydration, which in turn could cause dryness in the eyes. Apart from the factors mentioned, there are many other that could cause dryness in your eyes.
It is in your interest to visit your doctor to get the right treatment for dryness in your eyes. Avoid going to the chemist to get OTC eye drops to treat dryness. Using OTC medicated drops suggested by the chemist could encourage the growth of bacteria in your eyes. Also, there are certain chemicals in OTC eye drops that could cause an allergic reaction in your eyes. Many people who use OTC medicated drops suffer from irritation in the eye and redness. Avoid using OTC medicated drops as it can do more harm than good.
Most doctors prescribe eye drops which are free from chemical preservatives. The biggest problem with eye drops containing preservatives is that they have to be used with a restricted time. If these drops are not used within the restricted time, it could cause bacterial growth, which could harm your eyes. It is best that you avoid using eye drops which contain decongestant as it could make your eyes drier after it is used.
It will be prudent on your part to check the sensitivity of your eyes before you use eye drops to treat dryness in your eyes. If your eyes are sensitive, then it is best that you use antibiotic eye drops which do not have any preservatives.
