One of Wales' premier tourist spots, Tenby is called Dinbych-y-Pysgod in Welsh or "little town of the fishes." This picturesque walled town in South Wales is home to buildings in muted colors, scenic cliffs, and sandy bays. This town is located on the south Pembrokeshire coast, lying on Carmarthen Bay, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Swansea.
Tenby's history can be traced back to the Norman Conquest. The walls of the town were built in 1093 to protect it from the Welsh. Due to inaccessibility, the town and its old-world cobbled lanes and beaches were not reachable by tourists until Victorian times. Then, with the flood of rich merchants from Swansea and Cardiff, Tenby suddenly gained popularity, and its appeal as a holiday haven has remained ever since.
Getting There
Tenby is accessible by train through the local rail line to Swansea, Cardiff and Pembroke Dock. There are also limited services to and from London Paddington. By bus, you can take the regular service from Swansea and the periodic National Express Service from London and Birmingham.
What's on the sight seeing platter?
This whole town can almost be covered on foot. In fact, cars are not allowed in the town's historic center during the warmer months, making it a great place to relax. Attractions worth seeing in Tenby are:
-Four kilometers of sandy beaches
-Thin cobbled streets full of quaint cafes and shops
-13th-century medieval town walls including the Five Arches barbican gate
-15th-century St. Mary's Church
-Tudor Merchant's House, a 15th century town house available for public viewing
-Pembrokeshire Coast Path, part of Britain's only coastal National Park.
-Tenby Museum and Art Gallery
Things to Do in Tenby?
While you're there, try out one the weekend activities like paintballing, rickshaw, horse and cart, and surfing. There are also fantastic hiking tracks in and around the town. Spend a whole day bonding and swimming with the family in one of the town's sandy beaches. Hire a bike and follow one of the many cycling trails around Tenby.
Itching to shop? The best way to find good deals is to explore the many fascinating shops tucked away in the town's hidden streets. You may want to visit Caldey Island Gift Shop at the top of Quay Hill to find some extraordinary handmade gifts ideal for souvenirs. Be sure to try their yummy chocolates! Speaking of food, Tenby is not without great cafes and restaurants to satiate your cravings. Here are some of the recommended places you should not miss:
-Plantagenet House - located in a historic stone building in Quay Hill. It offers tasty and inexpensive meals.
-25 Cafe - located at 25 High Street, it offers simple yet fresh meals
-Fecci and Sons Ice Cream Parlor - located at Upper Frog Street, they serve the best ice cream in all of Tenby.
What makes Tenby more charming and loveable is that it has managed to resist prolific commercialization and thus remains a very elegant and pleasant family holiday location.
Where to Stay
If you are traveling to Tenby for a romantic weekend, then one of the best options is to choose a room in one of the small guesthouses that overlook the picturesque harbour. Alternatively, families will love the range of activities and great value accommodation available at one of the two Holiday parks just outside the town at Kiln Park and Lydstep Beach. |
