Longboarding is a fairly new sport that is gaining popularity very quickly. This alternative to skateboarding is becoming more and more recognizable and acquiring quite the following.
So, what exactly is longboarding? First, the longboard looks like a skateboard except that it is longer, hence the name.
Those that ride the boards most commonly use them for downhill racing, slalom or transportation. The longboard is much more stable giving riders a feeling of security.
The longboard is easier and safer for beginners to ride. Although a beginner will probably not be able to ride down hills at high speeds, it is definitely easier for transportation purposes.
The weight of the board makes the board much more unsuitable to do tricks. When you skateboard on a conventional skateboard you are much more able to flip the board and turn it with your feet.
The weight of the board is not only a negative aspect of the board. This weight gives the board the ability to carry momentum further.
This makes the board travel much father with one push than a conventional board would travel. The longer stride makes longboards much more appealing for cruising or distance riding.
Many people compare longboarding to surfing. This is why longboarders have coined the term surfing on concrete.
Just like on a surfboard, the lonboarders are able to make short quick turns or big turns. When a surfer rides on the waves they can also carve in the waves.
Within the longboards there are many different kinds of longboards to choose from. If you are new to longboarding do not be overwhelmed by the different options that are out there.
There is some pieces of advices that all beginners should abide by. If you are shopping for a longboard for the first time stay far far away from the boards that are labeled as "beginner" or "disposable".
These boards are very poor quality and will deter you from the sport before you even get a chance to enjoy it. Your equipment may break or you may hurt yourself because you are riding on poor quality boards.
Longboards are usually around $130. If you find a drastically less expensive model you will want to make sure that you are not also getting a big cut in quality.
There are many different shapes of longboards. Some of the shapes are pintails, flat nose riders and boards shaped like a longer short board.
If you have had some experience skating in the past you may feel more comfortable on a board that has a tail because it will be easier to turn. Pintails also permit looser trucks and larger diameter wheels that are better suited for carving.
When you are able to carve you will feel more like you are surfing on concrete. If this is the reason you are attracted to longboarding than this is the kind of board you will want to find.
If you are looking to buy a board for transportation purposes you are going to want a board that is about 100-130 cm long and does not have a shorter nose. The board should be more flexible to provide a more comfortable ride.
These boards will often resemble surfboards and will allow for narrow turns. The narrow turns are made possible because they are set up loosely.
This is a convenient alternative to walking because you only need to push one time to move several feet. Longboarding is often called cruising or carving when being done for transportation purposes only.
Slalom skateboards are the boards that are used for racing through courses set up with small cones as quickly as possible. These boards are usually only 63-89 cm long, and are made of very high tech materials such as carbon fiber.
The shorter boards are used in tighter courses where as the longer boards are used on steeper, faster courses and giant slalom. If you are aspiring to be a slalom skater you will need to understand that you will probably eventually be investing in multiple boards for different courses.
Slalom wheels need better traction and this is often times done by making the wheels bigger. Slalom trucks are often much narrower than normal longboard trucks to allow a tighter turning radius and may differ in design.
Longboarding is growing in popularity and becoming one of the more popular ways for people to get from place to place without driving. If you are looking to take up a new hobby longboarding could be the sport for you. |
