Many of us go past them on the way to work or whilst enjoying a bit of shopping in our city centres - but sometimes we fail to notice those splendid testaments to medieval engineering that are England's cathedrals. England is fortunate enough to have a great many of these impressive historic buildings - but getting to see them all can be a challenging process.
From imposing York Minster in the north to majestic Salisbury in the south, from Exeter in the west to Canterbury in the south east, the country's finest cathedrals are widely spread. There are many ways to organise such trips, from planning it yourself using public transport to opting for private tours.
The rail network offers a comfortable way to see your chosen cathedrals, as almost all cathedral cities are on the UK mainline. If you book in advance you can often get a good deal, although with such fares you need to ensure you're on the correct service or you may have to pay again.
Driving can be an enjoyable way to see the nation's finest churches for some, as long as the designated driver is comfortable with long periods behind the wheel. If your road trip is well planned it won't detract from the calming effect that these world famous icons offer. Those choosing to drive need to spend time planning their route, leaving plenty of time for sight-seeing, and it is advisable to avoid arriving in cities during rush hour!
Another alternative is indulging in a private tour of these sites. A privately organised trip might include everything from initial pick-up through to final departure. In-between, travellers normally have all their excursions organised, frequently enhanced by an experienced tour guide and comfortable transport.
In many cases those opting for one of the many private tours available benefit from being able to tailor their trip exactly as they wish. Special requirements regarding accommodation, food and transport can all be addressed with more ease than would otherwise be possible. Visitors can glide into York by train, enjoy a luxury coach trip to Canterbury, organise lunch near Salisbury cathedral or book a hotel a stones throw from Saint Pauls.
As symbols of England's rich past, these wonderful cathedrals are difficult to beat, and choosing the best way to see them for you is very important. Give yourself the best opportunity to really absorb the Gothic, Norman or Baroque atmosphere of these buildings, most of which have lasted for several hundred years, surviving both revolution and war.
And with so many fine examples, it's not easy to choose which cathedrals to put on your itinerary. Will you enjoy the ground-breaking Lincoln cathedral which was of such a unique design that the engineers had to make it up as they went? Or will you marvel at Exeter - which boasts the longest Gothic ceiling in the world? The iconic Saint Paul's promises you views across the capital while UNESCO-listed Westminster Abbey offers centuries of history. All of these landmarks have extremely colourful histories, each promising a wonderful addition to any cathedral-based holiday. |
