South East Asia has some amazing surf spots and a thriving surfing community - definitely a destination for anyone who loves the feel of water below and sky above and some fantastic waves in between.

Surfing is akin to a religion for many and it isn't hard to see why - the intoxicating proximity to nature, the sheer power of the water beneath your board, and the exhilaration you feel as you catch a wave and ride it in are inspiring.

So whether you are a beginner or experienced, looking for solitude and breathtaking breaks or the fun of a touristy surf town, then you will find something to suit you.

Indonesia is the undisputed jewel in the crown of surf spots in South East Asia. Java is the main island and has some awesome breaks such as Grajagan on the south eastern tip- the world's longest and fastest left handed reef break.

Bali is a well known destination, with surfers flocking to the laid back atmosphere and night life of Kuta. Lombok has some amazing waves, and is perfect if you want something a little less frenetic.

Many of the smaller islands are just as unmissable - Nias, off the west of Sumatra, is internationally renowned, as are the Mentawai islands which have a variety of breaks and are increasing in popularity, the Mentawai islands are popular amongst surfers taking week long boat trips to experience the best breaks and to soak up the friendliness of the locals.

The Philippines are up and coming within the surf community, and although many breaks are off the beaten track it will be more than worth it once you experience the waves.

The island of Luzon is home to Charlie's Point, a superb spot which breaks both left and right, and which featured in Apocalypse Now. Many die hard fans make the trip to the Philippines to experience empty beaches and great breaks.

Further North in Taiwan, epic waves are seen on the East coast thanks to the abundance of wind battering the coast all year round. Taiwan is not for the faint hearted or in-experienced as beaches are often isolated and waves can reach 20ft.

Thailand, although not necessarily on the pro surf trail, nonetheless has a number of good breaks which are worth checking out. Phuket is probably the best even if the most touristy- Kata and Karon beaches have good swell during the monsoon seasons, while Patong is good for beginners.
