There are a lot of good reasons for learning Spanish. As one of the more common languages spoken around the world, you will probably find it useful regardless of whether you actually end up traveling to a place where it is spoken. Since many universities require you to study another language, why not learn Spanish?

One good reason to learn Spanish is to be able to have more job prospects. Many employers look highly upon the ability to speak another language, especially if it is one that is commonly spoken by customers. Jobs in some areas even require you to be able to speak Spanish.

Speaking Spanish can also give you a lot more opportunities if you travel to a Spanish speaking country. You will be able to actually understand the locals and get recommendations and directions from them, rather than having to rely on tour guides and having to search for an English speaking person to help you out. The locals can recommend good restaurants, stores, and sights to see that are off the beaten path and not frequently visited by tourists. You will be able to see a bit more of the country than most tourists.

For those who are required to learn another language for school or for work, choosing to learn Spanish will be easier than learning many other languages. It is one of the easier languages to learn. There are a lot of similarities to English, including some structural similarities as well as some cognates (though you do have to keep an eye out for false cognates, or words that sound the same but mean totally different things). Once you learn how to pronounce the letters in Spanish you will be able to read most written Spanish with the correct pronunciation since it is almost entirely a phonetic language.

Once you learn Spanish, it will also be easier to learn other languages. Spanish is a romance language, with a lot of similarities to other romance languages, such as French and Italian. Spanish will give you a head start learning these languages, and just the practice in the process of learning Spanish should help you learn more about the process of learning a language so that other languages will be easier to learn as well.

Finally, it can be fun to learn another language like Spanish, especially if you can laugh at your own mistakes. It is a given that you will make some in the process of learning Spanish, but that is no reason not to give it a try. People learn a lot from their mistakes.
