There are many people who believe that Feng Shui is a bunch of hooey, and there are an equal number who are dedicated to the veracity of the philosophy. Feng Shui is a philosophy based on the influence and free flow of energy into a space.

Good energy is known as chi: Chi influences good health and wealth when it is allowed to flow freely and unblocked into your space. Feng Shui also includes the belief that wealth begins in the kitchen because wealth is linked to good health and good health is nourished and nurtured from the kitchen. To make your kitchen more receptive to positive chi, incorporate as many of the following tips as possible.

1. Leave enough room around the stove. The cooking area should not be crowded or blocked in any way and should be within sight of the door; the cook must never have his back to the door. Anytime someone enters out of the cooks line of sight, his chi is disrupted. A view to the door can be achieved by placing a mirror above the stove.

2. Choose auspicious colors. Red and gold signify good luck and good fortune, so they should be included in the kitchen. Black and white are the least auspicious of all colors so if your kitchen contains these colors, offset them with wall art and accents in red and gold.

3. Choose auspicious wall decor. Wall art, paintings and pictures of flowers and landscapes signify longevity, peace and prosperity and thereby enhance chi. And of course, you will want to choose art that contains the colors red and gold.

4. Include the positive influence of water. Water is always auspicious in Feng Shui, and while your kitchen may not be spacious enough for a waterfall or fish tank, a table top fountain that can be displayed on a countertop, table or windowsill will maintain positive chi while adding serenity to your kitchen.

5. Avoid sharp corners and do not block chi. Square corners do not allow chi to flow freely, so use rounded corners where possible. Keep doorways and windows clear of obstructions that may keep positive energy from flowing into your space.

6. Avoid darkness. Keep the kitchen well lit with countertop lamps, Asian or modern style candle wall sconces and under-cabinet lighting as well as overhead task lighting and a fixture above the table.

7. Harness the positive power of mirrors. Mirrors act as portals, drawing in positive energy. They also allow chi to pass through unused doors and counter the blocking effects of walls. They allow the cook to see what is going on behind his or her back and reflect other wings of the home back to the kitchen, the source of the homes nourishment and wealth.
