Food : Is The Coffee You Are Buying The Real Kona Coffee?

Coffee lovers everywhere have at one time or another learned about the richness of Kona Coffee. This deliciously brewed beverage will have you hooked with the first few sips but finding the real thing can sometimes be a challenge.
Kona coffee beans come from different areas of the big island of Hawaii aptly called the Kona districts. It is grown in Mount Hualalai in the North and Mauna Loa in the South end of Hawaii. The weather patterns in these areas make it the perfect place to produce the Kona beans.
From February to March the Kona coffee bean plants begin to sprout tiny white flowers and make way for green berries in April. By the end of the summer little red berries are ripe for the picking. The red berries are called cherries because they look just like them.
After the cherries are hand picked, they are pulped and hulled. Then they go through a process of fermentation, drying and then roasting to make the flavorful and expensive Kona coffee. It takes about seven to nine pounds of cherry berries to produce one pound of roasted coffee.
Because the process is so painstaking, and the Kona coffee is so expensive, many companies make a Kona blend which usually consists of only 10% real Kona coffee. But the state of Hawaii requires coffee companies to state the percentage of Kona coffee on their labels. If you are looking for the real thing you have to find a package of coffee that states 100% Kona Coffee.
The Kona beans are broken down into different grade levels. The highest grade is the peaberry bean. It is a rare occurrence but it is the result of the flower fusing together with the other side leaving only one bean in the cherry. This produces a more concentrated coffee bean and a stronger richer coffee.
Next in line is extra fancy, fancy, Number 1 and then prime. The beans are then roasted according to the strength of flavor - dark, medium or mild. Kona coffee, as most coffees, is best when you purchase it in whole bean form and then grind it yourself right before you brew it.
Coffee experts recommend storing your coffee beans in the freezer where they will stay fresh for up to two months. You can keep your already ground coffee in the freezer as well for about one month.
A pound of pure true 100 percent Kona coffee could cost around $30. You can purchase it in medium or dark roast in Extra Fancy, or Peaberry, the highest more concentrated grade. Kona coffee also comes in decaffeinated in medium to dark roasts as well as green beans for those who wish to roast their Kona coffee beans to their own taste.
If you really enjoy good coffee, you should definitely find a good coffee shop in your area that sells 100 percent pure Kona coffee. There are also many excellent online coffee roasters who have a wide assortment and you can have it shipped right to your home. |
