Finding a solicitor to take on your case can be a very daunting task. Not to mention trying to ensure that you are instructing exactly the right firm of solicitors for the job. It is at times like this that you should approach the relevant firms, within your area, with a clear set of basic criteria for what you will be looking for during your relationship with them.
Obviously and rather annoyingly, when you first set out to find the right solicitor for your case you are likely to find that all firms will be tending to promise you the same levels of service. In fact, you may find it very difficult to place a pin between most firms. Firms of solicitors have an uncanny way of advertising their service as though they are the best thing since sliced bread. They will make you feel as though yours is the only case they will be dealing with and your initial communication with most solicitors will be aimed at securing your instructions. However, it is at these times when you need to be the most cautious, keep a very open mind to their usual flannel and pose questions to them which will endeavour to ascertain how likely they are to provide you with the very best level of service for your case.
Ignore the parts where they promise you the earth, most firms of solicitors will not adhere to such promises! Instead, ask them if the case is likely to be delegated to a less senior solicitor or, worse still, a member of staff with no formal legal qualifications, as definitely sometimes happens. It will be up to you to ascertain how truthful you feel the response is here, if you feel that they are squirming rather uncomfortably, you have your answer.
Most importantly, you need to ask them how they are going to deal with your case and ask them to set out, very clearly, the merits of your case in their own opinion. In other words, get them to stipulate how likely it will be for you to go on and win your case. If you are applying for legal aid for your case, the firm of solicitors will be obliged to assess your chances of success anyway, before they go ahead and take your case on.
You should then ask the firm to stipulate what actions they feel are necessary to progress your case. Listen very intentively to this response as your decision on whether or not you instruct this firm is crucial here.
Find out how the solicitor will aim to keep you updated on the progress of the case and make them stick to this. In fact, go one step further and stress that this will be a crucial consideration on whether or not you go ahead and use them. This is the area where most people lose faith with their firm of solicitors, as they can be the worst, most ignorant, communicators in the World.
Once you feel you have found the right firm of solicitors, try logging on to an internet database that has impartial reviews on solicitors. There are many such such sites, where you will find accurate and up-to-date information on what previous clients have thought about different solicitors. Armed with this information as well, you will be in a much stronger position to ensure that you select exactly the right solicitor for your case. |
