In general, products are more effective for fund raising than services are. They are easy to buy, and people like to purchase products for a worthy cause. Product sales require less volunteer time and effort.
African products are especially effective for several reasons. They help support people in Africa who live in some of the most economically disadvantaged parts of the world. Customers can be given a wide range of choices, so they are certain to find something that they would want. The ideas are unique, and not something that the buyers can find easily somewhere else.
What fundraising methods can my organization use with African products?
Door to door canvassing is one of the oldest and most popular methods. In reality, most purchases are made by relatives and co-workers when these programs are used; and the work is more labor intensive than some other methods. But if you have a number of volunteers who can be involved, this may be the best for you. You will want to be careful about child safety in door to door programs. It is certainly best (and for safety reasons perhaps a requirement) that an adult be present when children do door-to-door canvassing.
Raffles, door prizes, and auctions are other opportunities. Many of the unique items from Africa can be promoted as one-of-a-kind, or as something that was produced by a specific individual or group. Depending on the nature of your audience or event, the right product choice can dramatically increase the amount of money raised.
Having a table or booth at an event which potential customers attend is another popular option. When an organization has a meeting or seminar, these African products often fit in.
The internet has given birth to some new and more creative options in fund raising. You can not only reach a much larger audience this way, but you can get in touch with a much larger percentage of your core group by using email and website announcements as well.
How do we keep volunteers from 'burning out'?
1. Set clear goals with deadlines, and take frequent progress reports.
2. Do one or a few fund raising events only. Your organization will normally raise more funds from one or two well planned events, than from fund raising done more often. Volunteers are far more supportive if there are one or two large goals than if they are constant pleas for fundraising events.
3. Make sure that your events do not coincide with other organization events. You can share your plans with other groups to avoid duplicating efforts.
What products will work the best for us?
Authentic African goods give you a tremendous opportunity for auction events. Many products are one-of-a-kind items that bidders will not be able to get any other way than through your auction. For one-on-one sales fundraisers, retail catalogs (with no name listed) gives your prospective customers almost 1,000 choices. You can pre-sell the products, collect the money if you need to, and order whatever combination of products your customers/donors order.
If you want to offer one or two products only, and order these in quantity, you can find the most popular items that we carry if you by going to the Bestseller's page..
You may also be able to find an idea somewhere else on our website that fits your fund raising theme or your donors tastes better. If you choose an item with a low price per unit, try to order something that people can order more than one of, so that people are not limited to a smaller contribution than they would want to make otherwise. The African soaps we have would be an example. |
