Building a following on Twitter can be very useful for many reasons. It is not the same as having a list, because the majority of your Twitter followers will not be interested in what you are doing online. However, many people will be responsive to some of the things you are doing, so be sure to include them when you are planning an event or promoting a product or service.

You can increase the chances of building a following that is interested in your specific niche by being choosier about who you follow. Look for people who are tweeting about your topic and asking questions about what you know best. You can also look at your closest competitors and see who is following them and who they are interacting with. This is completely ethical because of the transparent nature of social media sites.

Be sure to give useful and valuable content in your tweets. You may want to include some information about your personal life, but if you are on Twitter to do business, then you will need to remember that when you are tweeting. Interact with others as much as possible so that they feel like you care about their issues. Start a contest or a challenge to make it fun for everyone. This is social networking, so be sociable.

I keep a notepad next to my desk to keep track of when I tweet about something I am promoting. If I talk about it on a Monday morning I will also talk about it Monday night. This is because there is an entirely different group of people on Twitter at different times throughout the day. Different days of the week will also bring different people. Keeping track of the timing of your promotions will help you make more sales.

Don't get caught up in too many conversations while you are there. It is easy to get involved in a conversation with several people and spend more time than you intended. Politely excuse yourself and get back to writing articles, blogging, and creating products. You want to have something to sell as well as people to sell it to.

Another thing to remember is that everything you write will be seen by the world. Never say anything on a social networking site that you would not want your children to hear you say. Instead, show who you are by being kind, helpful, and thoughtful and you will attract a better group of people as your followers.
