Everyone will tell you that gaining weight is an awful lot easier than losing it. In order to gain weight, simply eat more calories than you use up, simple as that.

The problem arises when this has been happening for a number of years, the fat in your body has built up, and that is when it takes a bit more effort to lose.

The motivation for losing some of the weight that you have gained over the years can come from a number of sources. Maybe you feel discriminated against, or maybe you just want to look a little thinner.

Unfortunately there is a stigma amongst our society that discriminates against those with weight issues, which seems a little misplaced when you consider that recent studies put as much as 70% of the population of the US as overweight or obese.

Weight loss programs are ten a penny - they are easy to find and many have great attributes that will help you in your quest to lose weight. It is important to remember, however, that not all programs will work for you. Every one of us is different, and those differences mean that some weight loss programs will be completely inappropriate for your goals and requirements.

You may also have considered one of the many alternative or homeopathic remedies available today. Hypnosis is a prime example - some people extol the many virtues of this method that places subliminal triggers in your psyche that avoids certain foods and promotes more exercise. Other people think that this is simply a method of control that could be achieved without the need for hypnosis - you have to decide whether the benefits are for you.

However you choose to tackle the problem, it's important to understand that you can indeed lose weight. The hazards of continuous weight gain are well known: heart disease, high cholesterol included. In order to get rid of excess weight, a strong commitment is needed.

If you are indeed one of the majority of the population of the US and you are overweight, then one of the first things you should do before embarking on any weight loss or diet regime is speak to your doctor or specialist. As we have explained before, not every program will be appropriate for you, so to seek medical advice will see that you have a much higher chance of success before you even start!

Always remember that it's you who is in charge every step of the way - it is you who makes the decision to lose weight, and it is you who chooses whether it will be successful or not. Tell yourself you can do it, keep your beliefs with you, and he results will take care of themselves!
