Author Sarah Rossback calls the Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui the art of Chinese placement because the philosophy is based on the premise that success or failure is the outcome of mysterious earth forces and the flow or blockage of good energy and good fortune. Positive energy is called chi.
Feng Shui is built on the premise that certain locations bring good fortune and success; the way that homes and offices are arranged and situated affects the outcome of all endeavors. If you would like to invite more positive energy into your work space, consider the following tenets of Feng Shui.
1. Choose an auspicious location.
According to Feng Shui, it is better not to block your energy with other buildings, so a tall building surround by shorter ones would be considered auspicious. Another favorable location is at the intersection of several roads, as long as the location is not at an intersection that forms the shape of an arrowhead; this is considered a deadly place.
An unobstructed view of a body of water is highly auspicious, so much so in the Chinese culture that the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank in Hong Kong went to great political lengths to ensure that a park and low-lying garage were built between it and the Victoria Harbor. A tall building blocking the view would have meant that the banks chi, not to mention its success was questionable, at best.
2. Avoid inauspicious locations.
The Chinese would not consider the Sears Tower a favorable location for a business. Not only is the building shaped like a meat cleaver, it is very tall and therefore buffeted by strong winds which work to diffuse chi. Other unfavorable locations include those surrounded by taller buildings or near cemeteries or funeral homes.
3. A large entrance is favorable.
A favorable location features a large entrance, is not obstructed by columns or pillars and does not directly face a line of trees. According to Feng Shui, chi enters through doorways, so larger doorways are preferred. Chinese buildings are often designed with slanted entrances to allow the maximum amount of chi to pass through the entrance.
4. Water is always favorable.
Clean water is essential to chi, so bodies of water, fountains and even a fish tank in the office will bring favorable energy and success.
5. Colors are important.
Red is the most auspicious color and greens and yellows are also good. The most inauspicious, or least favorable, are black and white. If inauspicious colors cannot be avoided, influence chi by displaying a large wall art in red and gold.
6. Furniture placement affects chi.
The most powerful location is a corner office farthest from the entrance, so this spot is reserved for the company president or CEO. Poor placement of an executives office could mean poor performance for the executive and the entire company. |
