Here are two simple ideas for recycling those empty plastic soda bottles. They are both simple enough for children to complete.
Paper Mache Animals:
Empty soda bottles make a great base for creating paper Mache animals, dinosaurs and monsters. Partially fill them with a little sand or gravel to give them some weight. Build up the shape you want around the bottle using scrunched up newspaper secured with masking tape. You can also use smaller bottles attached to the larger one for big legs. Chicken wire also works well as an armature but take care if children are using it.
Put 6-10 newspaper layers of paper Mache on the animal and a final layer of white newsprint paper or even toilet tissue to provide a white base to paint on. Details such as noses, ears and horns can be loosely shaped with pieces of cut out card and masking tape as you go. Paint, varnish and decorate the finished animal.
Make a bait-catcher:
These can be a lot of fun to make with your kids. While it may sound a little finicky, I have made these very successfully with 5 year olds. Not only do they work, but is great technology fun if you let the kid work out how to do it instead of just following the instructions.
You will need two or even three empty soda bottles, some scissors, a hot glue gun and fishing nylon.
If you have ever seen the bait-catchers made in shops that is what you are aiming for. A long cylindrical shape with two open ends that taper into the inside of the catcher. This is so the bait can swim in, but not out.
Cut the tops and bottoms off the soda bottles. Check to see if the bottoms will fit snugly around the cylinder base. If they are too small you will need to slit the main cylinder and squish it in a little so it is smaller. Use the hot glue gun to secure it back together. Take the top ends that you cut off and trim them back further. You don't want to use the very thin pouring end as this will be too narrow for small fish, so trim them back so one opening is around 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter. Use the hot glue gun to attach the top ends inside the bottoms and cut off the bottom.
You should now have 2 covers with insides that taper in. Put some small holes at either end of the main cylinder and secure the nylon fishing line to it. When you go fishing you will attach a long line to this for lowering and raising the bait catcher into the water. |
