Even though parents have heard about youth military school programs or may even have had some experience with them, there might be some misconceptions and some assumptions that have been made that are not quite correct. Television, books and movies also may not have helped the stereotype of these institutions either, often displaying pictures of lonely children who live without love or emotional support, which is far from the truth. The truth of the matter is that the discipline, self worth and character building that children learn and gain from different programs is given by professionals with years of experience in helping children of all kinds from different backgrounds gain the upper hand with life by a system of nurturing, praise, hard work, dedication and positive attention.

Every youth military school is unique, every child that attends is unique, and every plan of instruction for children needs to be unique as well. Programs that are tailored personally for children is important, but so is forming that childs ability to be able to adjust to society and the rules of different social institutions. Being able to follow the rules and adapt as necessary in order to achieve success in different aspects of life is something that children must be able to do as they grow older in order to achieve their dreams in careers, family, and in life in general of course.

One of the most important qualities that youth military schools teach children is self esteem. It is true that this comes about with discipline, but it also requires encouragement, praise, quality instruction and surrounding the child in success. Many public school systems are simply not equipped with the resources or the staff to help children who need extra help to succeed, and these children often fall behind their peers in many different life aspects. Specialized institutions have everything that these children need to find their strong inner selves and succeed where other institutions would let them down.

There are different ages that children can enter these institutions at, and depending on the distance away from home, the mental stability of the child, the overall support that the child receives and the monetary means of the child and his family, different places focus on different levels of disciplines. The most effective programs are those that touch on many different disciplines, not just one. Concentrating solely on academics does no good if the child is not taught the value of hard work too, for example. There are many other benefits and misconceptions about youth military schools that are supported by research, too.
