It is the time of year when Americans tend to overindulge in things that they might normally enjoy in moderate amounts. For some of us, we tend to keep things in check while others go out every weekend and indulge in large quantities of alcohol, food or cigarettes. The result of overindulging is often headaches, hangovers, constipation, stomach problems or diarrhea. Over time it can cause you to add unwanted pounds, damage your digestive system, cause you to be tired or ruin your concentration levels. So, over the Christmas holiday maybe you should treat your body the way it is meant to be treated by taking certain precautions.
The most affected organ is the liver because of it's role in metabolizing fats, wastes and detoxifying the body. Anything that is not natural, in the food we eat, is removed by the liver. If the liver is overwhelmed the toxins end up being stored as fat. Other organs that can be damaged by overindulging are the lungs, gallbladder, heart, pancreas, endocrine system, small intestine and nervous system.
It is very hard not to overindulge in western society because it is such a part of our culture. Keep in mind, that it is possible to overindulge just a little bit while keeping your health in check.
Nature has it's own cures for those who choose to overindulge in food or alcohol. Luckily, they are gentle and not addictive (who needs another addiction anyway!). Milk Thistle, Slippery Elm and Marshmallow help to keep the liver strong and promotes balance in our bodily systems. Lupulus Humulus, Nux. Vomica and Lobelia Inflata are good at treating the symptoms of a hangover. They help to get rid of nausea, headaches and restore moisture to your eyes.
There are many things that you can do to try and avoid overindulgence before it even starts. Make sure that your meals are well balanced and contain all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Try to stay away from carbs like cereal, bread and potato chips during the later part of the day. Your meals do not need to be fit for a king rather the portions should be small and evenly placed through the day.
Make sure that you drink plenty of water through the day or inbetween alcoholic beverages. This will help to lessen your hangover. Also, drink a glass or two of water as soon as you wake up the next morning. Smoking plays a big role in hangovers so you should try to quit them as soon as possible. |
