In a lot of customs, most especially in Asian lifestyle, bowing often is the first thing performed when you greet an older person or enter into martial arts training environment. It is usually also the last thing you do as you leave. This shows respect, and is actually a refresher to yourself as well as to the someone who approaches that you come in peace.
