Interior Design : Bring a Cheerful Tropical Theme to a Utility Room

The drudgery of a utility room typically centers on laundry duty, bathing the family pet, and scouring or mopping chores that require the use of the utility room sink. But introducing a tropical theme to the utility/laundry room introduces cheer, color and fun, making everyday tasks a little more pleasant.

Start with Delicious Color
Think tropical and you can't help but think of delicious shades of mango, papaya, pineapple yellow and aqua. Choose a subdued shade of one of these colors to keep the room from appearing dark and cloying. If you have a lot of natural light in the room that might wash out the wall color, try sponging or ragging on a slightly deeper shade over the light one. Consider white washing cabinets, doors, and wood work or painting it in a creamy shade of off-white for a spacious look.

Easy Floor and Window Treatments
A neutral floor can gain color and texture with sisal area rugs, bamboo mats or plush area rugs that provide cushioning while you're working. If you are replacing the floor, vinyl is easy to keep clean and stands up well to moisture. In recent years vinyl flooring graphics have been greatly improved; terracotta tile patterns or wood patterns would work well in a tropical theme room and in a highly functional room like a utility or laundry room, saving the expense of more expensive flooring may be a wise decision.

Keep windows simple with roll-up bamboo shades in a dark or light finish. If you want a little more embellishment, simple tulle fabric in aqua, mango or hibiscus can be draped across length of bamboo mounted above the window.

Add Tropical Storage and Decor
Now add function and storage with tropical flair. If your utility room could use a little more storage, purchase a free-standing hutch with a combination of open shelving and closed cabinets. Units in rattan or wicker are inexpensive and generally available at discount stores. Use the open shelves to store wicker baskets filled with everyday necessities and sprinkle in framed photos or prints with a tropical theme, potted plants in frog or lizard flower pots, and glass jars filled with shells. Wall hooks, coat stands, and umbrella stands with tropical flair can organize outwear and reduce clutter.

Bring in a wicker trunk and add a tropical print cushion on top. Now you have a place to sit when pulling your shoes on or off and you can store whatever you want inside. Wicker, bamboo or rattan open wall shelves offer storage for small items and display space for little touches like jarred candles in tropical scents.

If you have wall space, tropical wall decor featuring palm trees, a tiki hut, toucans or orchids and hibiscus will accent the walls with splashes of color and eye appeal.
