Metabolism is your body's process of converting the calories you take in from the foods you eat into fuel or energy. We talk about boosting our metabolism or trying to speed it up as we get older and find it more difficult to lose weight, but the truth is that your body is constantly burning calories. Our bodies require calories and energy to do anything, including exercising, sitting in front of the television, and even sleeping.

By eating several small meals throughout the course of your day, you will provide your body with the fuel it requires to keep you going. In fact, you will be able to actually eat more and increase the speed at which your metabolism burns calories if you change your eating habits to this method. Eating two or three large meals each day simply makes you tires, leaving you with little energy to move around and make the best use of your day.

The main reason that eating smaller meals throughout the day instead of eating larger meals works is that your body actually gets a metabolism boost during the process of digestion. You end up with more energy and less stress on your digestive system, allowing you to get up and move around more easily. This is the perfect way to start losing weight.

You can also burn more calories if you have snacks throughout your day that are rich in protein, such as eggs, cottage cheese, lean meats, or other types of cheese. Your metabolism may jump up twice as high after eating two to three hundred calories of protein as it would after eating the same amount of carbohydrate calories.

Be sure to get moving. Depending on where you are starting from, walking is one way to build muscle while losing fat. After a period of time, include lifting small weights to increase muscle mass. You may want to carry small weights with you as you walk to get used to the idea of weight lifting. Over a period of about two months or so, you will be able to replace fat with muscle by including weights in your workout routine. This type of strength training will increase your metabolism while decreasing the chance for having osteoarthritis as you age.

You also want to increase the intensity of your exercise sessions over time. This is another way to boost your metabolism and burn fat more easily. The key is to make these changes slowly over time, but get started right away to take full advantage of the benefits of losing weight by boosting your metabolism.
