Punk trio blink-182 parted ways not so amicably in 2005 but Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker are on speaking terms again, fueling rumors of a highly anticipated reunion. Mark Hoppus wrote about a possible reunion on his blog, saying that the trio is considering coming back together after the recent death of blink producer Jerry Finn and the survival of drummer Travis Barker in the recent plane crash (DJ AM was also a survivor).
"We're just reconnecting as friends after four years of not talking. It's a good thing. Obviously the first question for a lot of people will be, 'Does this mean a blink-182 reunion?' The answer is none of us know. We haven't talked about it at all. Right now it's just good for the three of us to see one another, reconnect and let the past be the past," writes Hoppus. If the reunion does happen, try going online for Blink-182 tickets.
The new-school punk band formed in San Diego in the early '90s and guitarist/vocalist DeLonge, bassist/vocalist Hoppus and original drummer Scott Raynor self-released an EP titled Fly Swatter in 1993. The group was known simply as Blink but after releasing the LP Cheshire Cat via Grilled Cheese/Cargo in 1994 they were forced to change their name to blink-182 because of a similarly-named Irish band.
Blink-182 hit the road with Pennywise and NOFX on the 1996-97 Warped Tour and then Dude Ranch was released jointly by Cargo and MCA. The album went platinum by 1998 thanks to the popular single, "Dammit (Growing Up)" and blink-182 officially inked a deal with MCA. Raynor was replaced by Travis Barker, formerly with the Aquabats, for blink-182's fourth album, Enema of the State, which was released in 1999.
Produced by Jerry Finn (Rancid, Green Day), Enema propelled the punk group into the mainstream with commercially successful hits like "Adam's Song," "All The Small Things" and "What's My Age Again?" and sold over four million copies. The limited-edition release, The Tom, Mark and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back) followed in 2000 with a new song, "Man Overboard," as well as live songs.
In 2001 blink-182 returned to their SoCal punk roots for Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, which was followed by 2003's blink-182 released on Geffen. The eponymous album boasted the Cure's Robert Smith on "All of This" and "I Miss You" topped the charts in 2005. Just when blink-182 seemed unstoppable, the trio unexpectedly announced they were taking an indefinite hiatus from the band. A greatest hits compilation followed that November and then the guys stuck true to their word and split up to focus on their families and other projects. Barker was busy with his clothing line Famous Stars and Straps, playing with the Transplants and starring in the MTV reality show Meet the Barkers.
Hoppus had a fashion venture of his own, called Atticus, and stepped on the other side of the studio to produce for projects like the soundtrack for Motion City, Commit This to Memory. DeLonge started the band Angels and Airwaves and, believe it or not, also segued into fashion with his lifestyle brand, Macbeth. DeLonge and Barker came together musically for Boxcar Racer and Hoppus and Barker did the same for Plus 44. If the rumors of a blink-182 reunion are true, hurry up and get your hands on Blink 182 tickets before they're all gone! |
