Breast augmentation surgery involves changing and enhancing one or both breasts. Like all other surgical procedures, preparations must be made before the patient can have the operation. After consultation with a plastic surgeon, there are some steps that a patient may have to take before having the surgery. Some are rules to follow or involve temporary changes, while others are permanent. They are all meant to help the patient have the best possible outcome from the procedure from a medical standpoint.
Alter Medications
Depending on the type of augmentation performed, some patients are given a general anesthesia, while others are given a local anesthetic. IV sedation is also an option. In order for them to work safely and effectively, a number of requirements must first be met. The plastic surgeon will go over the types of medication the patient is taking. The person may be asked to stop taking certain types of prescription medicine beforehand so that they do not interact with the anesthetics, the operation itself or the healing process. Blood pressure, pain and psychiatric medications, among others, may have an adverse effect. When they are stopped or altered ahead of time, there is less risk of danger to the patient or the breast augmentation surgery's success.
Stop Smoking
Smoking tobacco has various physical effects on people. One is that smoking reduces the oxygen supply in the blood. Those undergoing surgical procedures increase the risk of pulmonary complications if they are smoking within several weeks of the surgery. There is also a higher chance of infection. Another complication smokers face regarding surgery is that scars do not heal as well. They remain redder and visible longer.
Diagnostic Testing
Mammograms must be done before the surgery can be performed. Although this can cause breast soreness, it helps the plastic surgeon's team plan out the procedure. This will serve as a diagnostic tool for the surgeon. A mammogram beforehand will be used as a baseline to judge surgical adjustments and physical changes that may occur after the breast augmentation is complete. Another one will likely be done a few months down the road for comparison purposes.
Lose Weight
Some patients that are overweight or obese may be directed by their doctor to lose weight before the surgery. There are certain health risks involved in operating on people who are overweight. Losing weight not only makes the patient healthier, it also reduces the risk of complications during and after the surgery. |
